When it is necessary to knock out a fireplace, build a chimney breast or just add a hearth to a room, you have many options of materials that can be used for this. There a number or regulations and recommendations from Hetas and the Stove Manufacturers that we need to adhere to or consider but as for there finishes these are yours to choose.
The Fireplace Opening
Once the opening has been created and all of the debris removed from site it is then our job to finish this to the style and look that you choose. Some choices of materials are;
- Heat proof boarding
- Render finish (on larger openings only)
- Ceramic tiled
The opening itself would need to be large enough to cater for the finish, for example the opening width would need to be big enough to hold the stove, plus 150mm of air space either side before any finishes could be decided upon.
Heat Proof FireBoard
Most applications require materials which are non combustable and thinner in depth than brickwork. We use a product from British Gypsum called GlasRoc Multiboard and this offers that property. Finishing the opening in a clean a crisp way it offers you the chance to finish it with paint to help the opening blend into the room if required.
Rendering inside fireplace openings is often thought of as the preferred option for finishing. However render can often blow off of the base materials when heat is applied and therefore we prefer to give you this option on larger openings and inglenooks where there is more air movement around the stove.
Your choice of bricks either new or reclaimed can be used, along with your choice of joint colour. Our surveyor will be happy to give you an idea of what would look nice in your home.
Stone Fireplace and Opening
This can often be a more expensive way to finish the face and inside of the fireplace but adds some dramatic looks to your room. With some various types of stone and designs, from bath stone to York stone and from contemporary to traditional we can give you whatever your expectations are to have a stunning finished fireplace. We work closely with stonemasons and fireplace suppliers to achieve that perfect finish.
This finish can give you many different finishes. With the option to tile into the opening as well as the hearth ad face of the fireplace this can be a good way to match everything up.
Facing the opening and Beams.
Beams can be used over fireplace openings where we have installed a stove, however there are some regulations to state where this can be placed. Below you will some options of beams and brickwork facade designs. The beams that we use are seasoned oak and finished on site by sanding ready for the client to apply their required finish after that.
Hearth materials vary from one situation to another. With a fire place opening stone, bricks, slabs or various other materials can be used. These are also suitable for stand alone hearths where the stove does not have a fireplace around it but additionally to these materials you maybe like to consider, Glass, slate or granite.
